Upstream oxygen sensor is also known as sensor 1, or pre-cat, or upper oxygen sensor.
Downstream oxygen sensor is also known as sensor 2, or post-cat, or lower oxygen sensor

The sensor achieves optimal engine performance by monitoring the oxygen content in a vehicleâs exhaust and regulating the air/fuel mixture to the ideal ratio of 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel
If the optimum fuel mixture is not maintained, the engine can emit harmful amounts of carbon monoxide and excessive levels of hydrocarbons
A correctly operating oxygen sensor ensures efficient engine operation by making sure the engine is receiving the correct air/fuel mixture and thereby preventing the engine running lean or rich
